The role oversees all aspects of design and development for new real estate projects, including new builds, expansions, and takeovers. The role also involves design management for special project rollouts, which are smaller store touches generally initiated by the merchant and operations teams.
The role will manage, develop, and coach a team of managers that are delivering the new store program, and a team of managers delivering special project rollouts. The role will support the team and serve as an escalation point for any 3rd party disputes, promoting collaboration and pushing for swift resolution.
The role will identify, select, and educate various external consultants (including architects, engineers, project managers) on building and site design processes, policies, and standards. Additionally, the role manages Master Service Agreements, maintaining records, training, quality control, and productivity assessments as needed.
This role coordinates and solicits input from internal cross-functional teams (such as logistics, operations, risk management, and asset management) to develop and deliver project-specific designs. The role is accountable for expense and capital budgets related to design execution and the continual development of prototype standards. The role
will champion in the review, assessment, and required modifications of all design consultant contracts and MSAs. The role develops and maintains consultant scorecard KPIs to identify opportunities for continual training and development within consultant teams.
The role integrates new methods and materials for site and building design to provide end-to-end solutions, including maintenance for existing stores, focused on total life-cycle costs. The role collaborates with international counterparts and internal teams on best design practices and reports metrics on sustainable building design initiatives, including innovative energy efficiency and waste reduction programs. The role is responsible for the integration of site plans, engineering, and building drawings, securing associated permits, and ensuring compliance with standard specifications and policies.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; advanced degree preferred.
- 15+ years of progressive experience in the industry, with a strong background in capital construction projects.
- 5+ years of leadership experience managing teams and external consultants delivering large-scale capital programs (annual program value exceeding $100M strongly preferred).
- Proven expertise in grocery retail construction, including new store builds and remodels/maintenance in active store environments.
- Strong foundation in civil engineering, planning, and development; professional credentials in these areas are highly desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, influence decisions, and present to senior executives.
- Experience with refrigeration systems in retail or commercial settings is a significant asset.
