The role oversees compliance related to privacy, records retention, data protection, and responsible and ethical use of AI, ensuring the company’s digital, CRM, multi‑channel, and personalization strategies incorporate privacy-by-design principles and support innovative, trusted customer experiences.
This position directs the strategic development, design, implementation, and execution of sustainable compliance programs, ensuring compliance with technical and regulatory standards through standard operating procedures, controls, inspections, audits, incident management, and performance analytics. This role will approve the qualifications and service standards of all service providers, including data processors and AI-enabled vendors, and contributes to continuous improvement measurements across various products and services to protect sensitive data and ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
This role drives privacy, data protection, AI, and related compliance risk identification and remediation with senior stakeholders. This role also prepares and delivers reports and presentations to senior leadership, identifying risks and obtaining operational support for compliance initiatives, including Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs), data governance activities, and AI risk assessment outcomes.
In partnership with senior leaders across the business including Technology, Product, Digital, CRM, Legal, HR, and Health & Wellness, this role initiates the design, development, and implementation of systems, procedures, controls, and monitoring related to privacy, data handling, and compliance. The role defines success metrics for areas of responsibility and integrates them into core business metrics, monitoring and evaluating program processes to close compliance gaps and drive continuous improvement.
Building and deepening relationships with key senior management, the role embeds a tone from the top and accelerates Ethics & Compliance programs, integrating privacy and records management education, communications, alerts, and tools in collaboration with Ethics & Compliance, HR, and Legal teams.
This role articulates corporate positions on compliance matters to regulators and external agencies and, in partnership with Legal and Corporate Affairs as appropriate, directs involvement with regulators at federal and provincial levels to ensure compliance with all legal and privacy requirements.
This role develops external relationships and alliances that strengthen the company’s reputation within the compliance community, including those focused on privacy, data protection and AI governance, and leads regulatory outreach meetings to ensure that the company’s compliance programs, policies, procedures and reports are communicated in a persuasive, accurate, and understandable way, and that sensitive data is protected. The role monitors emerging compliance requirements and best practices- both in Canada and globally- and develops responsive strategies and implementation plans, ensuring compliance programs, policies, procedures, and reporting leverage global talent and resources where appropriate.
Qualifications:
12–15 years of progressively senior experience in privacy, data protection, records management, data governance, or related disciplines, with increasing responsibility for strategy, compliance, and organizational impact.
Minimum 5 years’ experience as Privacy Officer or leading a privacy compliance function at a large global organization.
Compliance leadership experience within the following industries: IT, retail, health, e-commerce, or financial services is an asset.
Certification by International Association of Privacy Professionals or a similar certification is an asset.
Ability to manage complex projects and influence a broad range of internal and external stakeholders.
Demonstrated experience designing, building, implementing and leading privacy compliance and Enterprise Risk Management frameworks.
Strong knowledge of privacy laws and best-in-class privacy frameworks.
Extensive experience in the areas of privacy by design, compliance management frameworks, risk management, records management, and data governance.
Proven experience developing and governing enterprise-wide records retention and information management frameworks.
Experience leading a team of subject matter experts.
Strong executive leadership experience.
