Position Summary...
This Health and Safety Specialist role is responsible for the planning, implementing, and monitoring of specific Workplace Health and Safety Programs and perform safety inspections and audits with the goal of identifying opportunities to identify and remediate risk and ensure compliance and continuous improvement. This position will be responsible for oversight of the day-to-day health and safety program requirements across a region and will be responsible for enhancing and supporting the safety culture in facilities while teaching, training, recognizing and inspiring associates. The main goal is to always ensure a safe working environment and work collaboratively with associates, leaders and safety teams to prevent injuries and accidents.What you'll do...
1. Perform a thorough assessment of the organization's health and safety training needs. Identify gaps in knowledge, skills, and competencies across different levels and departments. Develop a comprehensive training plan that addresses key areas such as accident investigation, root cause analysis, and health and safety roles and responsibilities. Coordinate and facilitate health and safety training sessions using a variety of delivery methods, such as classroom instruction, workshops, online courses, and hands-on demonstrations. Solicit feedback from participants to assess the effectiveness of training sessions and identify areas for improvement. Review and update health and safety training programs to include new information, regulatory updates, best practices, and lessons learned from accidents/incidents or near misses. Stay abreast of emerging trends and technologies in health and safety training to enhance the effectiveness of training delivery. Maintain accurate records of training attendance, completion, and evaluation results.
2. Ensures business needs are being met by evaluating the ongoing effectiveness of current H&S plans, programs, and initiatives; consulting with business partners, managers, co-workers, or other key stakeholders; soliciting, evaluating, and applying suggestions for improving efficiency and cost effectiveness; and supporting a safe work environment.
3. Obtain health and safety data from various sources, including accident/incident reports, near-miss reports, injury reports, safety inspections, and risk assessments.Analyze the data to identify trends, patterns, and/or common themes related to workplace accidents, injuries, and hazards. Review feedback and suggestions provided by the Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC). Based on data analysis, JHSC feedback, and risk assessments, develop comprehensive action plans to address identified issues and improve health and safety performance. Define clear objectives, timelines, responsibilities, and performance metrics for each action plan.
4. Act as a mentor to all levels within the organization, offering guidance on safe practices and procedures. Provide support and resources to help them understand the importance of safety and how it relates to their work. Motivate others by sharing success stories and emphasizing the positive impact a strong safety culture has within the organization. Recognize achievements and milestones in safety performance. Recognize associates and teams for their contributions to maintaining a safe work environment.
5. Participates in workplace inspections to highlight and address safety concerns.Solicit feedback from associates to identify areas for improvement. Ensure that identified safety concerns are addressed in a timely manner and resolved. Work with relevant business partners to develop and implement corrective actions, such as engineering controls, administrative measures, or additional training. Follow up regularly to validate that corrective actions have been implemented and are effective.
6. Obtain safety data from various sources, including accident/incident reports, near-miss reports, safety inspections, audits, training records, and safety metric dashboards. Analyze trends over time using statistical techniques and data visualization tools. Look for patterns, correlations, and anomalies in the data that may indicate underlying issues or areas of improvement. Identify trends in specific types of incidents, locations, departments, or activities. Prepare clear, concise, and visually appealing reports summarizing the findings and work with business partners to implement corrective actions.
7.Ensures the execution and implementation of value-added H&S strategic initiatives (Mental Health, Safe Lifting, MHE, etc.) by executing H&S Risk Assessments, evaluating operational processes and procedures for potential improvement opportunities; collaborating with regional operations management, and cross functional teams to ensure proposed initiatives match operational capabilities; and overseeing the integration of strategic H&S initiatives into Logistics operations.
8. Provide advice, consultation, and interpretation of Health & Safety legislation to management, safety committee members and other stakeholders. Offer clear and concise explanations of Health & Safety legislation, highlighting key provisions, definitions, and compliance requirements. Encourage open dialogue, feedback, and collaboration to ensure that legislative requirements are effectively implemented and understood at all levels of the organization.
